Be a curious Traveler

In a world of judgement and separation, we need to be more curious. Travel makes the world smaller, brings people together with revealing similarities and marvel in the differences.

The inspiration to this writing is a trend of travelers wanting to take trips to less crowded destinations. Its more about discovery and not following the masses. These are curious travelers.

Let me start by saying I have taken over 25 cruises and I have 2 more upcoming trips planned. But there could be areas to improve. The release of many new mega ships of “drop-in tourists”, not spending much time or money in ports like Barcelona, Dubrovnik and even Rome. In some cases they are limiting the number of large ships in a port at the same time, others increase taxes to help offset the disruption to the residents and business owners with little to gain from this tourism. Itineraries booked well in advance can have ports deleted or changed, leaving passengers with some level of disappointment. Having a good agent watching trends and shifts can help minimize so that you can enjoy your trip. Of course, managing expectations and being flexible is helpful.

Cruises are a cost effective way to sample several destinations with very little planning or effort. I personally love when drinks, tips and specialty dining is included. This helps keep a set budget. Some lines offer excursions with the fare also. Smaller ships are becoming more popular at different price levels. Smaller ships allow opportunity to visit smaller, less crowded ports with a more personal experience. I look for the overnight ports of call. Cruises are a taste test of future travel for many. To answer demand for expanded experiences, there more options of river cruises, adventure or expedition ships.

I think its very important to see the wonders of the world. But once experienced, I want more. Something deeper than stone. I want to feel the heart of the country and its people. See their home through their eyes and what they are proud to share with me and how they watch the smile on my face. Its about relationships, people interacting. Breaking bread with a new friend after a day of exploring the beauty.

Think about the way we eat in the states, we are used to quick meals, with heads down, and cellphones out, travel shouldn’t be consumed quickly. We can do better, we need to stay curious. Maybe we can learn from one another.

Many get overwhelmed with all the details in planning a trip to a foreign country. So I understand the love of cruising. For those lacking expertise, contacts or confidence to do it on your own, there is help. The services of travel agents can help take the fear and hassle allowing for better travel experiences. Every detail can be laid out for the client and with no additional cost.   In addition, you have a partner to assist you before and during travel and if things go wrong.

Fulfilling travel experiences can be honed to personal passions and interests.Immersing into the culture, people, food and having unique experiences. Land sea options are brilliant to gain confidence and slow down in new destinations.

Your agent can create an itinerary to allow for time to embrace their customs and language. If you are willing, push your comfort zone. Even if we fumble, they know we are trying. Remember they feel the same as us with English. Take time to be curious, ask questions, engage in conversations. Ask them where they go for a family dinner out, seek out the road least traveled. Think about the one thing we all have in common, how we celebrate together…a meal. Sit with others, share a meal or a beverage, again, be curious and ask questions.

Beyond our social media posts, let’s get more pictures in our minds and in our hearts as curious travelers. Perhaps leave a smile on someones face after we leave.
